Living with Tinnitus – My Tinnitus Story and Solutions

What is Tinnitus?

tinnitus refers to hearing sounds in your ears, which may include beeping, ringing, buzzing, or humming. It is not an illness but rather a symptom linked to an underlying health issue. If you have recently begun to notice these sounds, it’s important to see an ENT doctor, as it may indicate an ear-related concern.

My Tinnitus Story

My Experience – The Start of My Tinnitus Journey

I used to enjoy reading books at night before going to sleep. However, I transitioned to audio books due to technology and began sleeping with headphones on, often letting the audio play throughout the night.

Over time, I started to feel a sensation of fullness in my ears and some occasional heaviness. It usually faded away on its own, so I never paid it much attention.

On February 14, 2025, I made the mistake of falling asleep with earphones again. The following morning, as I listened to music on the bus, everything seemed fine. But by evening, when I put my earphones back on, I noticed a persistent “beep” in my right ear.

Initially, I thought it might be due to earwax build-up, so I went to see a local doctor. He examined my ears and discovered fungus, prescribing medication. However, after three days, the sound persisted. That’s when he suggested I consult an ENT specialist.

Doctor’s Diagnosis – The First Shock

I visited an ENT doctor, who ran some tests, all of which came back normal. Then he asked me several questions:

  •  Do I feel dizzy?
  • Am I experiencing nausea or vomiting?
  • Do I have any headaches or heart issues?

Since I didn’t have any of those symptoms, the doctor diagnosed me with tinnitus, explaining that it could be either temporary or permanent.

“Permanent?”

That was the moment that unsettled me. When I inquired about a cure, the doctor replied:

“There is no permanent cure, but changes in lifestyle and sound therapy can help manage it.”

He further clarified that tinnitus could fade in 10 days, 10 months, or even 10 years. He prescribed medications and recommended an MRI scan to rule out brain tumours as a potential cause. However, he reassured me that he didn’t suspect a brain tumour but wanted to be thorough.

Learning to Cope with Tinnitus

In the first 8-10 days, I fell into a deep depression. The sound occupied my thoughts, making it difficult to concentrate on work. Ultimately, I took eight days off to cope with my distress.

Then I began to wonder – What if this sound is permanent? Would I spend my whole life consumed by it?

That’s when I chose to alter my perspective:

  • People who are completely deaf still find joy in life.
  • Those with physical limitations continue to strive and enjoy their existence.
  • I can hear; it’s just one sound – should I allow it to dominate my life?

From that moment on, I began to view tinnitus in a different light.

How I Manage My Tinnitus

Masking – The Most Effective Method

I play soft music, white noise, or nature sounds (like rain or ocean waves) in the background.

This helps to mask the sound of tinnitus, making it less prominent.

Avoid Earphones and Loud Noises

I have completely eliminated the use of earphones.

I steer clear of loud places like weddings or parties.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Practicing yoga and meditation has been beneficial for me.

Maintaining a healthy diet and getting sufficient sleep are crucial.

Adopt a Positive Mindset

I have come to accept tinnitus as part of my life.

Instead of battling it, I focus on finding joy in other areas.

Final Thoughts – There’s No Need to Fear Tinnitus!

Living with tinnitus can be tough, but it doesn’t mean life is over. If you’re facing this challenge, remember:

“You are not alone, and tinnitus can’t take away your happiness. Accept it and enjoy every moment of life!”
